Thursday, December 9

Last night I woke up again for about 2 hours. I had another bout of homesickness, but it wasn’t as bad as last night. I knew the feelings would pass. Helena had asked me last night if I wanted them to wake me up again this morning. I said yes, but it was Nancy who woke me up and at 10:30! I totally slept through the girls coming in to get dressed and brush their teeth. Because of some bad weather last night, Mark and Nancy cancelled their first appointment in Berlin. I got ready, ate some bread with marmalade and a tangerine with tea. Mark’s mom made the jam from berries in their backyard (their “garden”).

The secretary came to get my luggage information. We’ve been told it would arrive today. Shortly after that, I saw her go around the house and return with my purple suitcase! I was so excited to have my things and be able to get on my computer again (mine was close to dying, so I needed my converter before I could plug it in)!!! I played Christmas music while I unpacked and organized all my stuff.

I spent some time on facebook and email and then made a very late lunch. I boiled an egg to make an egg salad sandwich, but I undercooked it a little bit. About the time I was getting ready to eat it, the girls came home from school. They ate leftover spaghetti while I ate my sandwich. Nancy had called to say they would be home later, but I didn’t really understand how late she meant. I didn’t realize we were supposed to eat something for dinner without them, so I ended up skipping dinner. Oops!

I taught the girls Phase 10. We went outside and made a snowman, snow angels, and tackled each other. We also made a fire (in the fireplace). Gloria tried to start it, but ended up starting it outside of the fireplace. Haha! I quickly corrected that. I also made them word searches with English words. If they didn’t understand the words, they had to ask. They really had fun doing them and then making ones for me to do. They usually forgot to include a couple of words so I had to ask for help.

When Mark and Nancy got home, we were in the upstairs living area, watching an animal trivia show and doing word searches. After the girls went to bed, I brought out my computer to show them pictures of the family. Nancy brought out her little laptop and showed me pictures of their time in Spain and Mark’s HUGE mountain sheep he shot, the girls baptism, the “garden” (backyard), etc. We talked a little bit about religion. She asked what religion I would be. I said Baptist, and then said probably like Tom and Missy. They looked confused for a few seconds. They talked about the church across the street a little bit and Mark showed me his “shrine”. It’s a bronze antique statue of Jesus on the cross. Then he promptly went over to a collection of alcohol against the wall and said that was his church. Nancy made the comment that “Christian is Christian”, in reference to catholic, protestant, Baptist churches. I didn’t know how to correct her without offending since I don’t know them very well, so I let it slide, but it made me very sad.
